Those "mini-ev" motors are good. Real good price on them too. They can be
had at surpluscenter.com for about the same price as well, item #10-1537. I
plan to use them as my drive motors. They have an internal cooling fan so
they can run for extended periods without overheating (I know someone was
talking about having that problem a couple days ago). So far I've only
tested mine at 12v, but the little buggers had so much torque they nearly
jumped out of my hand the first time I tried it. I ran one for about ten
minutes and it was actually cold to the touch, of course I wasn't in the sun
either.
They have two drawbacks, the brush holders are prone to breaking when
impacted under load (not a big problem if we can get the illustrious Mr.
Tyng to take a remedial driving course, lol), and they run at a pretty high
rpm (about 1000 per volt). But I found this site:
http://www.2badbots.com/miniwalt.htm which has instructions on how to mount
them to a dewalt gearbox.
People use the "mini-ev" as drive motors in lightweight battlebots because
you can run them at 18v for a power boost. If I remember right, it tops at
about .5hp each. Not bad for a motor that only weighs a pound.
